
Australia will mandate emergency lane keeping systems on all new passenger vehicles and light commercial vehicles from 2029 under new Australian Design Rules aimed at reducing the nation’s road toll. The Federal Government has confirmed that all newly introduced passenger cars, SUVs, utes and vans with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) below 3.5 tonnes will be required to comply with the new requirements from March 1, 2028. The mandate extends to all applicable new vehicles sold in Australia from March 1, 2029.
The regulations introduce Australian Design Rule (ADR) 107/00. This rule specifically requires emergency lane keeping systems capable of actively steering a vehicle back into its lane if it begins to drift unintentionally. At the same time, Australia’s autonomous emergency braking (AEB) requirements will expand to include cyclist detection. This builds on existing vehicle detection rules and the pedestrian detection requirements that take effect from August 2026.
This move aligns Australia with United Nations regulations governing emergency lane keeping systems. It mirrors similar requirements already adopted across Europe. Unlike passive lane departure warning systems, emergency lane-keeping technology actively intervenes by applying steering input when a vehicle unintentionally departs its lane.
During consultation on the proposal, the Federal Government cited research from the Monash University Accident Research Centre. The data indicates that unintended lane departures account for 42 per cent of fatal crashes on Australian roads. When the proposal was originally released, the government estimated the technology could reduce fatal light vehicle crashes by almost 12 per cent. Over a 35-year period, this could save 6989 lives and prevent more than 23,000 serious injuries.

Technical Alignment and Delays
The lane-keeping mandate was first proposed in 2021 with an intended introduction in 2024. However, implementation was delayed to better align Australian regulations with international standards. Regulators also needed to ensure overseas-developed systems could reliably recognize Australian lane markings.
This delay suggests a pragmatic shift in how safety standards are adopted. Rather than rushing to meet an arbitrary deadline, regulators appear to be prioritizing technical compatibility to prevent the introduction of ineffective systems that might confuse drivers or fail in local conditions.
Many new vehicles already offer both emergency lane keeping assistance and cyclist-detecting AEB. These features are particularly common in models carrying five-star ANCAP safety ratings. However, the government has cautioned that simply fitting the technology is not sufficient. Systems must also comply with the detailed operational performance standards specified under the new regulations.
That distinction has previously forced manufacturers to withdraw or update models. Last year, the rollout of ADR 98/00 – which mandated the inclusion of autonomous emergency braking as a standard feature – temporarily forced several models out of Australian showrooms. In some cases, the removal was permanent because existing safety systems failed to meet Australia’s mandated performance requirements despite them offering similar technologies.

Exemptions for Larger Vehicles
The new rules apply only to passenger vehicles and light commercial vehicles below 3.5 tonnes GVM. Heavier utilities and commercial vehicles will remain exempt from the emergency steering requirement. This includes models such as the Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series, Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado and other heavy-duty pick-ups that fall into higher weight classifications.
Instead of active steering, those vehicles will continue to require autonomous emergency braking with vehicle detection. From 2028, they must also have lane departure warning systems. These systems alert the driver without actively steering the vehicle back into its lane.
ANCAP has also refined its testing procedures to evaluate how naturally lane keeping systems interact with drivers. The organization assesses steering interventions and the ease with which drivers can override the technology. Vehicles imported before March 1, 2029, can continue to be sold after the regulations take effect. Existing vehicles already registered in Australia will not be affected.
