Jaecoo expands J5 range with hybrid model

Jaecoo Australia has added a conventional hybrid version to its J5 small SUV line‑up, giving buyers an electrified option alongside the existing petrol and battery‑electric models, starting at $34,990 driveaway.

New powertrain details and market positioning

The J5 Summit Hybrid, slated for Australian showrooms in August, becomes the third powertrain choice in the range. It targets customers who want better fuel efficiency without the need to plug in. Competing models include the Chery Tiggo 4 Urban Hybrid (from $29,990), GWM Haval Jolion Hybrid (from $32,990) and MG ZS Excite Hybrid (from $30,888).

Unlike the larger J7 and J8 Super Hybrid System models that use plug‑in technology, the J5 employs a series‑parallel hybrid system. A turbocharged 1.5‑litre four‑cylinder petrol engine works with an electric motor and a dedicated hybrid transmission. The electric motor is a permanent‑magnet synchronous unit rated at 150 kW and 310 Nm, while the gasoline side adds 105 kW and 215 Nm. Together they produce a combined output of 165 kW and 295 Nm, sending power solely to the front wheels.

Jaecoo states the J5 Hybrid consumes 5.6 litres of fuel per 100 km on the combined cycle and emits 126 g/km of CO₂. The vehicle is covered by an eight‑year/unlimited‑kilometre warranty for both the car and its battery, matching the brand’s broader warranty strategy.

Features, interior tech and safety

Externally, the hybrid keeps the same design language as the petrol‑powered J5, with the main visual difference being a set of model‑specific 18‑inch Aero alloy wheels.

Inside, the Summit Hybrid offers an 8.8‑inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.2‑inch central infotainment touchscreen that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The “Hello Jaecoo” voice assistant is also integrated.

Standard equipment includes a panoramic fixed glass roof, 50 W wireless smartphone charging, selectable ambient lighting, acoustic front‑door glass, heated and ventilated front seats, a powered tailgate, and a 360‑degree surround‑view camera. The brand continues to highlight its pet‑friendly credentials, using silicone‑based synthetic leather upholstery that claims antibacterial properties, higher durability and easier cleaning.

Safety features consist of seven airbags and a suite of advanced driver‑assistance systems (ADAS) as standard. These ADAS tools comprise autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control and emergency lane‑keeping assistance.

The J5 Hybrid arrives in August.

From a broader perspective, the J5 Hybrid’s introduction reflects a growing trend among Chinese automakers to diversify powertrain options in markets that are still developing their charging infrastructure. By offering a conventional hybrid, the company can attract buyers who are hesitant about full electric vehicles yet want to reduce fuel consumption, positioning the brand to capture a segment that sits between traditional gasoline SUVs and fully electric models.

Ownership benefits extend beyond the warranty. Buyers receive eight years of capped‑price servicing and up to eight years of roadside assistance, emphasizing Jaecoo’s effort to build long‑term confidence in its relatively new Australian presence.

Overall, the addition of the J5 Hybrid expands the electrified portfolio, now encompassing petrol, hybrid, plug‑in hybrid and battery‑electric powertrains across its SUV range. The move signals the brand’s intent to compete more aggressively in the Australian market, where consumers are increasingly attentive to fuel economy and emissions without sacrificing the convenience of a conventional SUV.
